Excerpt
Excerpt: Looking around his apartment, 45-year-old Ray Carver can hardly believe his good fortune. Not long ago, he was living in abandoned buildings and drinking cheap whiskey. He had survived like that since he was a teenager, traveling up and down the East Coast, periodically being arrested for shoplifting or vagrancy and spending months at a time in jail. In his early twenties, Ray was diagnosed with schizophrenia by a psychiatrist in a District of Columbia jail. Since then, he had taken medication sporadically and had been institutionalized twice for his mental illness. Most of the time, however, he lived on the streets and drank heavily.
