Excerpt: CURRICULUM STRUCTURE: For students to be successful, they cannot be dropped into a problem-based learning situation without significant preparation. Six years of experience using these environmental health science curricula with Oregon State University Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences (SMILE) Program demonstrate that students need a specific set of content knowledge and process skills to take on the role of the expert. As an expert, they must analyze and evaluate data collected and participate on a team that reaches consensus on a problem solution. Therefore, each of the Hydroville Challenge Problems begins with a set of eight to twelve background knowledge activities that build the base of content knowledge and process skills required to solve the problem. (See the concept map of the Pesticide Spill Scenario that follows this overview on page 4). After completing all of the background activities, students are divided into teams to study the problem scenario
